UCバークレー大学がら車で15分、 閑散とした工業地区の一角に、使い古された中古の冷蔵庫、70年代製のTVなど、膨大な量の廃品が並んでいるのが見える。 一見、 ゴミ処理場のように見えるこの建物、 実は知る人ぞ知る「アーバン・オーレ」という巨大なジャンクストアなのである。Located in a rather dull industrial neighborhood in Berkeley, Urban Ore is a locals’ hidden hangout spot for scoping out unusual treasures. Formally described as “Discard Management Center”, Urban Ore may be defined as more than ordinary so-called junk stores.
この体育館程のスペースには、ありとあらゆる「モノ」が所狭しと陳列されており、初めて来た人はまずその量に圧倒されるだろう。 毎年3500トン以上のゴミをバークレー市の廃品センターからピックアップし、リサイクル商品として販売しているのだそうだ。
都市のゴミ問題が悪化する中で、 エコロジーを重視したアーバン・オーレの流通システムは、バークレーの廃品コントロールに大きく貢献している。
店内は３つのセクションに分かれており、 それぞれ異なるプロダクトラインを扱っている。建物の外側に位置する「The Building Materials Exchage」は、タイル、バスタブ、トイレ等のホーム改築用品を販売、店内のメインフロアーを占める「The General Store」は、 60年代風のテーブルから、デザイナーズソファー等、様々な家具を主に取り扱っている。中には、レトロな蛍光カラーでペイントされたような床屋のイス等もディスプレイされており、ファンキー指数はかなり高い。そんな中で個人的にプッシュしたいのが、店内の奥にある「Arts and Media Room」と呼ばれるセクションで、マッククラシックやアタリ社のゲームマシン等、オールドスクールなコンピュータ機器から、ビニールジャンキーには嬉しい中古レコード、そして、様々なジャンルのアート系雑誌、古本等も豊富に取り揃えている。品数がとても多く時間をかければレアな掘り出し物が見つかる可能性は大きい。そして忘れてはならないのが、プライス設定。一般のアンティークストアーに比べて、アーバン・オーレではどのアイテムもリーズナブルな価格である。
バークレーまで足をのばした時は必ず立ち寄ってしまうこのアーバン・オーレ。来るたびに面白いアイテムを発見できる楽しみは、子供の頃、おもちゃ箱の奥に何があるか探る時の感覚に似ている。上記した「Arts and Media Room」は、フレッシュなグラフィックやインスピレーションを求めて、多くの地元アーティストやデザイナーに利用されているようだ。環境問題に興味のある人、ただ単にJUNKINGに凝っている人も、一度アーバン・オーレを探検する価値はある。

Text: Kanya Niijima from MMSW LabsBy picking up over 3500 tons of refuse as their sales items from the city’s waste system, Urban Ore re-distributes what seems to be “dead” products discarded from the local homes and businesses, greatly contributing to reduce the whole waste level in Berkeley.
In the vast store space occupying the half of the street block, Urban Ore is divided into three sections with different product lines specified. The Building Materials Exchange, located outside of the store, specializes home improvement products from doors to bathtubs. The General Store in the main space mostly caters all sort of furniture and interior goodies. There are many cool retro items from 60’s and 70’s such as fluorescent colored barber chairs that were discarded from a local shop decades ago. Another giant room next to the main space is called The Arts and Media Room where you’ll find miscellaneous old computers, unusual used books/magazines, family photographs, records, and other visual/audio items. If you are seeking fresh graphic resources, it may be easy to spend the whole day looking through the countless amount of inspiring materials. Even if not, it’s worthwhile stopping by the store. Urban Ore always has something for everybody.
