Rue Oberkampf, Paris, is an area that keeps taste of old downtown yet is visited by young people. It is colored with services such as cafés, bars, clubs and galleries. Once you wander off the street, you will find an interior shopパリ、オベルカンフ通り。

with a look of an artists’ spot. When I first found it I just took some pictures of the atmosphere of the building and objects I found on the street without knowing what the place was. However, one day, a man came out from the shop and informed me that it is a shop and “where you can see its fireplace” entrance.

The man’s name is Stéphane Quatresous. He is an owner of the interior shop “Atelier 154”, and has a career as a dealer of second-hand goods in a flea market. Stéphane started the shop/atelier when a man was closing his studio left the location.

In the shop, 1920s and 50s antique furniture and furniture created in the atelier are lined up randomly, and each one is lovable. According to Stéphane, influences from modern artists are huge such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mallet Stevens. Creation of the original furniture is so influenced by the antique furniture in the shop, at first glance it is difficult to identify the original furniture and the antique—their tones go well together. The owner let me tour around an atelier in the back, and there I found a pleasant atmosphere for the artisans to concentrate on their work. There was a mysterious scent of wood and steel mingled. Holding the plans in their hands, artisans were in middle of creating furniture that will probably be in the shop in the near future. They were also working on lay out of an outdoor terrace. In the photograph of the past projects, plants and furniture were arranged in rhythmical manner as if indoor.

Just like the way “modernists” were, it is a significant aspect for Atelier 154 to focus on simplicity in their designs. Steel and wooden furniture that are minimally structured have silhouettes of forms and quality that leaves a strong impression. Simplicity is also reflected in the way the shop is. Respecting every visitors and the shop cherishes the communication at hand. If exterior attracts you in any way, I recommend without hesitation you to go inside.
