The bustling marketplace of Old Spitalfields has been the focus of human activity for hundreds of years, in fact even its name is derived from a medieval hospital that was founded in this very spot in 1197賑やかなオールド・スピタルフィールズ・マーケットは、数百年もの間、人々の生活の中心となってきた。その名前の通り、このマーケットの名前は1197年にはこの場所に存在していた中世の病院（スピタル）に由来している。
この場所はオックステール（牛の尾）スープ発祥の地でもあり、1880年代にはユダヤ系移民によってベーグルが伝わり、今でも名物の美味しいベーグルが近くのブリック・レーンで手に入る。さらに第二次世界大戦中には、マーケットの八百屋の主人たちが、祖国の防衛のために戦闘機「スピットファイア」のために資金を提供したこともあった。

第二土曜日は「オールド・スピタルフィールズ・トレーダー」と呼ばれ、この日はすべてのトレーダーたちにとって、彼らが持つ最高の商品を展示するための一日である。アートから野菜、さらにその他の様々なものがこの日マーケットで見ることができる。
第三土曜日はデザイナーとメーカーの市場であり、この日の見所はファッションや家具、陶磁器などの工芸品である。将来的にはこの場所で、トレーダーと利用客の両者が参加できるインタラクティブなデモンストレーションやワークショップが計画されている。これによって利用客が工芸品をより向上させることにつながり、彼らもまたよりユニークなアイテムを入手することにもつながる。そしてそれによって、マーケット自体の評判が向上することも期待できる。

19世紀のイギリスを偲ばせるレンガ造りの飲食店を背景に、マーケットの持つ歴史的な魅力が視覚的に一層引き立っている。これらの古き良き建物だけでなく、非常に現代的な外観と雰囲気を持ったレストランがマーケットの中心に存在する。しかしこれは“ちぐはぐ”なわけではなく、市場全体の雰囲気にぴったりと合っているように思える。それどころかマーケットの外には、より高層な近代建築に加えて、より長い歴史を持つ素晴らしい建造物も同時に存在しているのだ。
他の曜日でも同じようにマーケットを楽しむことが可能だが、特に平日はそれほど混雑していないため、静かに考え事をしつつ、リラックスしながら探索することもできる。
また金曜日には主にファッションが主に扱われているが、一方で毎月第一金曜日と第三金曜日には、多くの音楽ファンを魅了するレコードフェアが開催されている。
曜日によって様々な特色をマーケットは持っているが、しかしどの曜日にマーケットを訪れても世界中の言語があちこちから耳に入り、まさにロンドンの文化の中心にいるかのような感覚を常に感じることができる。
観光客や学生などの外国の人々はみな、イギリス土産にオリジナリティあふれるアイテムを探しにここへやってくる。例えば私が最近ここを訪れた際には一度、国旗によって領土が色分けされた世界地図を探している日本人観光客に遭遇したことがある。彼女は一時間ほどである屋台を見つけ、誇らしげに大きく手を振りながら大声で「見つけた！見つけたわ！」と喜んでいた。
マーケットは毎日開催されており、入場料は無料だが、自分の買う分だけのお金を忘れずに。ロンドンの主要駅であるリバプールストリート駅のすぐそばにマーケットはある。
すぐ横には「スピタルフィールズ・マーケット」もある。インドカレーとベーグルショップがあることで知られるレンガ道を曲がると「アップマーケット」と呼ばれるサンデーマーケットもある。ここは世界中の食べ物を購入し、味わうことができる特別なマーケットだ。

In this place of human industry Oxtail soup was invented, later in the 1880s the settlement of many Jewish people brought the bagel to this area – even now you can go to nearby Brick Lane to sample a famous and tasty bagel – and during the Second World War fruit and vegetable traders funded their very own Spitfire plane for the defence of Britain.
Just from this little taste of history it seems clear that this market has its own special character that has always attracted people to it, stimulated innovation and for just these reasons it has become very famous. Regardless of the weather the market is open all days of the year, protected from the elements by a spectacular ceiling of girders and windows, over a hundred stalls and thousands of customers compete in their selling and buying. On any day of the week a huge contrast can be seen amongst the shoppers, from ultra-fashionable youths, to city workers on a quick shopping spree and older customers taking a leisurely look over a multitude of items.
To add to the unique features of Old Spitalfields there is a specific kind of market every day, the Saturday Market itself is further differentiated by a rotation of four themes. The first Saturday of every month has been named Judy’s Affordable Vintage; it is a sublime blend of budget and vintage items. It is an opportunity to find all manner of items at astonishing prices. The second Saturday is called Old Spitalfields Traders, this is the day for every trader to show the best that they have for sale, and anything from A for Art to V for vegetables, plus xyz for everything else can be seen. The third Saturday is the Designers/Makers market; the focus on this day is on crafts, including fashion, furniture and ceramics. In the future it is planned to also have interactive craft demonstrations and workshops, once this is in place it will further add to the prestige of the market as customers will be able to become involved in craftwork too and will be able to make a unique item for themselves. The final Saturday of the month is reserved for the Antiques and Collectors Flea Market; for anyone who loves to find a special item or fabulous antique then this is the day to visit.
The appeal of Old Spitalfields Market is that it readily lends itself to mutually attractive preposition, anyone can apply to be a trader and sell their fashion, their art or anything, and everyone can come to see what is new in town, or old. Having a stroll around in the Designers/Makers market is an amazing opportunity to see some of the newest designers and artists showcasing their work. At the same time the market is surrounded by a large number of shops, cafes and restaurants. Thus, it is very easy to spend time looking at everything in the morning, have a break and eat lunch in one of the nearby restaurants, and then go back and make your purchases in the afternoon. The shops add more to the market’s charms as they are brick buildings, reminiscent of nineteenth century British buildings and thus add visually noteworthy background scenery of Britain’s illustrious past to an already fascinating market history. This past meets the present with restaurants in the centre of the market which have a very modern look and feel, yet rather than looking incongruous it seems to fit the overall presentation of the market. Indeed, outside the market there are some rather tall modern buildings and also some delightful older looking structures.
On other days of the week it is possible to find equally thrilling market days, and away from the weekend it allows for quieter contemplation and more relaxed searching for wanted items as it is not so crowded. Friday is another popular day as it is primarily for fashion, but on the first and third Friday of every month there is a record fair which attracts many music enthusiasts. However, on any day of the week you will feel as if you have entered the multicultural centre of London as from every angle you will be able to hear languages from all over the world. Foreign residents, students and tourists all take advantage of the market to find a unique piece of British memorabilia. Though, on one of my recent visits to the Sunday market I came across a Japanese tourist looking for only one thing, a world map with a border of international flags. Within an hour she came across a stall that had it and proudly waved her hand in the air, shouting “I found it! I found it!”
The market is open every day, there is no fee for entering, but please remember to bring cash for your purchases. It is near a main train station, Liverpool Street, which is also on the Central line. Alongside Old Spitalfields Market there is also Spitalfields Market, around the corner you can find Brick lane, which besides being famous for Indian curry restaurants and bagel shops, there is a Sunday market called Upmarket. One of the specialisms of this particular market is a famous food area where food from around the world can be bought and tasted.
