The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa aims to introduce the world’s contemporary art in a far-sighted perspective to create new culture, being part of the changing world’s art scene「金沢21世紀美術館」は、世界の変わりゆく現代美術に市民と共に立ち会い、新しい文化を創造する新感覚の現代美術館。兼六園や繁華街の近くに位置する美術館は、2004年10月、学校跡地に開館。誰もがいつでも立ち寄ることのできる公園、「まちの広場」のような美術館を目指し、そのコンセプトに基づいて妹島和世氏と西沢立衛氏（SANAA）が設計した。
外観は正面も裏も区別のないガラスのアートサークルとなっており、四方のどこからも出入りすることができるオープンな雰囲気が、街と美術館を一体にさせる。館内にある様々な施設は街の広がりをイメージしてほぼ水平方向に配置。平面図は「金沢21世紀美術館」のシンボルマークともなっている。
施設は展示室、シアター21、アートライブラリー、茶室、託児所、カフェレストランなど様々なジャンルに対応し、市民が気軽に楽しく使いやすく利用することができる。
無料入場のできる範囲は広く、恒久展示ではレアンドロ・エルリッヒ氏の《スイミング・プール》（写真）やパトリック・ブラン氏の「緑の橋」などの作品、所蔵作品では奈良美智氏の作品をはじめ、多くの現代美術作品をコレクションしている。
「金沢21世紀美術館」は、展覧会と連動した教育普及プログラムや一般鑑賞プログラム、「金沢若者夢チャレンジ・アートプログラム」など、作品展示以外にも様々な分野に積極的に取り組み、金沢の街と共に世界を視野に入れた未来への創造の橋渡しをしていく。

Located near Kenrokuen and downtown, the museum was opened in the site of school in October 2004, designed by SANNA, an architect duo of Sejima Kazuyo and Nishisawa Ryue under the concept to make like a park where anybody can come by anytime, and to aim a museum as a city plaza.
Circular in form, the building has no front or back, leaving it free to be explored from all directions, which unite the city and museum as a whole. The circularity of the plan also works in concert with keeping the overall building volume low, to effectively mitigate the scale of the project and an overly grand presence common to large institutions. The site plan is used for a symbolic logo for the museum.
The museum consists of various spaces including Theater 21, art library, tea ceremony room, nursing room, café restaurant. The areas where you can enter for free are large, the museum showcases Leandro Erlich’s work “The Swimming Pool” (above) among others, and the collection includes works of Yoshitomo Nara.
In conjunction with exhibitions, the museum approach the various programs including educational programs, general viewing programs, and Kanazawa’s young dream challenge art program.
