Daydream Nation is a Fashion Arts House originally founded by brother-sister duo Kay and Jing Wong in 2006. Aside from being an international fashion label, Daydream Nationデイドリーム・ネイションは2006年に姉弟のケイ＆ジン・ウォンが立ち上げたファッション・アート・ハウス。国際的なファッションレーベルとしてだけでなく、演劇やダンス、音楽、映画、ビジュアルアートなど様々な形式のアートとコラボレーションを行い高い評価を得ている。2010年にはさらにカルロスとトレ、２名のチームメイトが加わり、香港のクリエイティブハブの先駆けとして新たな旅路を始めている。
今回のインタビューはセント・マーチンズ・カレッジ・オブ・アート・アンド・デザインでプリントテキスタイル学士号、及びロンドン・ロイヤルカレッジ・オブ・アートで構成テキスタイル修士号を取得したデザイナー、そしてスタイリストとしても活躍しているケイが答えてくれた。
まずはじめに自己紹介をお願いします。
デイドリーム・ネイションのケイです。2006年にブランドを立ち上げ、ファッションシアター形式から発展し、毎シーズンのコレクションで物語性のあるファッションを発表しています。香港アートセンターとK11セレクトに店舗があり、カクテル、Dモブ、カポック等のセレクトショップでも取り扱いがあります。現在は中国、日本、韓国にマーケットを広げ、日本ではアッシュペーフランスが公式取扱い先です。
香港で住むことについてどう思いますか？
ロンドンとは全く違いますね。ロンドンは既に街自体が「デイドリーム・ネイション（=空想の国）」なんです。香港はロンドンほどインスパイアされる街ではまだないので、この雰囲気を何とか変えていきたいと思っています。
ブランド名をこの名前にしたのも、香港には空想家に対してある種の強い差別感情のようなものがあるから。私達は香港をクリエイティブな人たちがあつまる場所にしなくてはいけません。ファッションだけでなくて、クリエイティブな人たちが集まり、シェアし、コラボレーションするという意味も含めて、です。以前、湾仔（ワンチャイ）に２階立ての店舗をもっていたのですが、その２階部分では展示やワークショップを行っていました。こういった活動も私達のブランドの大切な一部ですね。
香港で自身のビジネスをもつことについてはどうお考えですか？
ロンドンから香港に戻ってきた理由は、物価が安かったからです。でも2006年以来、物価も地価も全てが高くなってきて、状況は常に変わりつつあります。デイドリーム・ネイションのアクセサリーは全て地元女性によるハンドメイドです。10年前にたくさんの工場が中国に移転したことで職を失った女性がたくさんいました。技術のある彼女たちと繋がることができて幸運でした。
香港のファッショントレンドは？
香港の人たちは一般的にあまり自信がなく、人と違いすぎるスタイルを好まないように思います。ヒラリー・ツイやワイマン・ウォン等のセレブと同じ服、同じ髪型を真似することに終始していますね。街は同じ見た目の人で溢れていてつまらない。日本でも似たようなことはあるかもしれませんが、様々なジャンル（コンサバ／ギャル／ゴスロリ等）の中から好きなものを選ぶことができるというのは大きな違いだと思います。
香港のアート愛好者はどこに集まるのですか？
色々ありますが、油麻地（ヤウマテイ）のキューブリックは映画にフォーカスした場所で、シアターにブックスストア、カフェが併設されています。開催者には無料で場所を提供し、デザイン関係者のトークショー等のイベントもやっていますね。香港の地価は高くて自分の店やスペースをもつのは難しいため、こういった場所があることは重要なことだと思います。
セントラルのフリンジクラブもシアターと展示スペースにカフェが併設された、私達にとっての理想の場所かもしれません。ただここはどちらかというと西洋化されていて、ローカルな人たちが頻繁に訪れる場所ではないですね。
銅鑼灣（コーズウェイベイ）のバッシャー・デザインブックスは私も大好きです。広すぎない店内ですが品揃えがよく、しかもいつ行っても静か。店員さんはその人が誰なのか、どんな本を探しているのかを覚えていて、毎回気に入りそうな本を紹介してくれます。さらにこの店の価格は他の店より30％も安く、その場に無くても取り寄せてくれます。
同じく銅鑼灣のアフタースクール・カフェ。ここも大好きですね。オーナーも店員さんも良い人たちばかり。ちなみにオーナーは「マム」というレストランも経営しています。
休みをどう過ごすのが好きですか？
料理をしたり、ビーチやラマ島、長州島に行くのが好きです。上環（ションワン）とセントラルの界隈や、湾仔の星街（スターストリート）を歩くもの好きですね。
香港への旅行者にお勧めの場所は？
大澳、ここは香港の昔の姿を見る事ができる漁村です。それからオーシャンパーク、バードストリートや金魚ストリートの近くにあるフラワーマーケットも見てまわるにはいいと思います。

Text: Kanae Tamase is celebrated for its cross-disciplinary collaborations with other art forms including theatre, dance, music, film and visual arts. Since 2010, Daydream Nation welcomed two new teammates, Carlos and Tore and started new journey as a Hong Kong’s leading creative hub. Interview this time was with Kay who is a designer and celebrity stylist, graduated from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in BA Printed Textile, and MA in Constructed Textiles at Royal College of Art, London.
Could you tell us about yourself?
I’m Kay from Daydream Nation. We’ve been doing this brand since 2006 and slowly developed from fashion-theatre into more fashion story telling and every season we tell the story through the collections. We have our shops at Hong Kong Arts Centre and K11 select, also our clothes are sold at several select shops such as Cocktail, D-mop, Kapok, etc. Now we are also expanding to China, Japan, and Korea markets. H.P.FRANCE in Japan is our official agency.
How is it like living in Hong Kong?
Well, it’s different from London, definitely. London is already a “Daydream Nation” in itself but Hong Kong is not yet as inspiring city as London. And we hope to recreate that atmosphere.
We named our brand because there’s a very strong, kind of racism against daydreamers in Hong Kong and we have to build this nation as a base for the creative people to gather. It’s not just about fashion but also about creative people gathering, sharing, and collaboration. We used to have our shop in Wan Chai area with 2 levels. And on the top level, we did exhibitions and workshops. This is also important part of our brand.
How is it like running your own business in Hong Kong?
The reason why we moved back from London to Hong Kong is because it was cheaper. But since 2006, the price, rents and everything have been going up. So it used to be an advantage but the situation is changing. Our accessory line is all hand-made at studio, and we were lucky to find women with good skills who lost their jobs since many factories they used to work at moved to China 10 years ago.
What do you see the fashion trends in Hong Kong?
I guess Hong Kong people are generally not very confident and they don’t like to be too different. So they follow the styles of celebrities such as Hilary Tsui, Wyman, even if the style doesn’t fit them. It’s boring when everyone looks the same on the street!
Where do the art-conscious people visit in Hong Kong?
There are some places in the city such as; Kubrick in Yau Ma Tei is film-focused place with theatre, bookstore and café. They let creative people do some talks and activities without asking them pay and this is important because it’s expensive to have own shops in Hong Kong because of the high rents.
Fringe Club in Central is also an ideal place for us because they have theatre, exhibition space and café. But it’s rather westernized, not many local people go there often I guess.
Basheer Design Books in Causeway Bay, I really love this store. It’s not too big but have a good selection of design, architecture, fashion books. And it’s always quiet and you can always have good conversation with the shop assistant. He introduces you to the books you may like because he always remembers who you are. And it’s normally 30% cheaper than other bookstores as well. They also order the books for you if they don’t have the book you were looking for.
After School Cafe in Causeway Bay is one of my favorite. The owner and the staffs are lovely people. The owner runs restaurant called “Mum”.
How do you like spending your day off?
I like to take care of my plants, cook or go to beach and islands like Lamma or Cheung Chau. I also like wandering around Wanchai, Sheung Wan and Central area.
Which places do you recommend for the tourists?
Tai O is where you can see the realbeginning of Hong Kong as a fishing village, it is such a huge contrast to the city. I would also definitely reocmmend Ocean Park over Disneyland, and of course the Flower market along with bird and gold fish street are very loval places to see.
