As an institution to pray for permanent peace, Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall was built in the bombed area between Nagasaki and Hiroshima原子爆弾による多くの死没者の犠牲を銘記し、恒久の平和を祈念するための施設として、被爆地である長崎・広島の両地に設置された国立原爆死没者追悼平和祈念館。2003年7月に開館した長崎にある祈念館は原爆資料館横に位置し、両館は互いに地下通路で接続している。
施設は、白樫の生垣に囲まれた、水のせせらぎがする水盤の周囲をまわって地下の館内へと下りて行くようになっている。この直径29mの水盤は、被爆した多くの方々が求めた“水”をたたえており、夜になると光ファイバーによる約７万個の明かりが灯る。この７万という数字は1945年12月末までの推計原爆死没者数である。
地下１階は、手記展示コーナーや追悼空間を上部からのぞむ追悼コーナーがあり、短時間で追悼・平和祈念が行える。地下２階へと下りていくと、そこは薄暗く、沈黙が流れる静かな空間となっている。
順路に沿って進むと、まず被爆に関する資料の閲覧、端末機による遺影や体験記、証言音声、映像の検索・閲覧が可能な遺影・手記閲覧室を通って追悼空間前室へと入る。そこは追悼空間へと入る前に心を落ち着けてもらう為の場所であり、中にある黒い大きなモニターには死没者の氏名や遺影が浮かび上がっては消えていく。
そしてこの祈念館の中でも最も特徴的な追悼空間へと入って行くと、開かれた空間の中に12本のガラスの光柱が立っている（写真）。これらガラス柱の上部は開閉式のトップライトとなっており、またガラス柱が建ち並ぶ方向が原爆落下中心地となるよう設計されている。さらにその奥には原爆死没者の氏名を記した名簿が納められた名簿棚が配置されている。
追悼空間の壁は杉板の本実で型どった、１枚毎に段差をつけたコンクリートの打ち放し仕上となっており、杉板の年輪とその積層によって歴史の積み重ねが感じられる様になっている。見上げるその光柱には外からの光が差し込んでいた。建物全体を象徴するかのようなその姿には、多くの人々の様々な想いが込められているのだろう。
館内にはとても荘重な空気が流れており、全体を通して統一された建物内部のデザインが、さらにこの祈念館を訪れた人々に与える印象を大きなものにしている。
設計は栗生明が担当し、2006年には村野藤吾賞を受賞している。
資料館に対し、祈念館の内部には原爆関係の資料などはほとんど展示されていない。ただ無になり自ら心を落ち着けて、あの原爆が残したもの、また原爆により失われたものについて考えさせられる。

Text: Yuki Mine, engraving the atomic bomb victims. Opened in July 2003, the hall is located next to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, and both institutions are connected with underground passageway.
The building is surrounded by white oak and water, visitors can walk around the water circle to get enter inside the building. The 29-meter-diameter water circle praises the victims it will be lit with 70,000 pieces of optical fiber light at night. The number 70,000 refers to the estimated number of atomic bomb victims died by the end of December 1945.
On the 1st basement level, there is a space displaying notes and an area for commemorating the victims, and on the 2nd basement level there are more space where you can search, browse and view the database of the atomic bomb and its experience notes. Before getting into the memorial space, you will need to pass through a pre-memorial space where you calm down before entering to the memorial space. In the memorial space there are 12 lighting glass columns (photo) in a open space. The top of the column is retractable so they are used as top lights, and columns are designed to the direction to the atomic bombed center. Going into the space, you will find a listing of the victim’s name on a shelf.
You will feel a full of solemn atmosphere in the entire space in the hall which was designed by Akira Kuryu, who received an award for its design in 2006.
