TETUSINTETUSIN

Based in Fukuoka, Takayuki Senzaki has been exploring his creative works in the name of TETUSIN since 2006.

As his works range from plant graphics integrated into space design using diverse materials to design and art direction of shops and some planning, TETUSIN is taking an important role in the art scene in Fukuoka. Shift interviewed TETUSIN about his activity and the city of Fukuoka.

Please introduce yourself.

I’m as art director as well as a graphic designer based in Fukuoka. I work with not only 2D design but also space and ornament designs. My goal is to approach multi-dimentional design that links the inorganic elements with the organic. Simple and inorganic space is cool, but it makes less passion or regionality. For example a shop with cool interior has few sales. I think that the fact is derived from the space design. So I’m seeking the design that can connect object and people, people and people. My interest in space and ornament design came from visiting 2 places. One is Saihoji temple’s garden in Kyoto. Another is Secession in Austria, as known for the golden cabbage. I got very good experience in that 2 places and the experience felt those places is becoming an energy for my work.

Please tell us your recently work.

I’m changing my style from 2D design to 3D design using steels or LED as materials and also shifting to the blanding graphic. Even I’m not familiar with materials, there are some interesting points to look into things in the graphic design point of view, which differs from that of interior designers. As decorated a commercial building with Christmas ornamnts in last year. I made a picture book and created scenes from the book on the walls. I had started with making a picture book in the graphic designer’s view point, as to design the decoration in the interior designer’s view point. Also, I made the decoration with steels on the preschool’s wall. As I built planter boxes into the design, there will be growing the plants which will cover the steels to create a work of art as a whole. I came up with the idea as I saw there’s no garden with greens in the preschool so that I wanted to create a 2 dimentional garden using the exterior wall. I’m trying to find a way to connect graphic design with space or invisible values.

What is your opinion on Fukuoka’s art scene?

In my opinion, as a suburban city it seems it is difficult to make creative scenes relating with the economy in Fukuoka. It is disadvantage for business. This disadvantage makes creators egoistic, and that brings less quality. The art scene depends on every artist’s effort. This means it is hard to keep to develop the art scene, I think. Recently the only way to seen the art is to visit the art museum. In the public places there are more traditional arts shown than contemporary one. What does most of us who are dealing with creative things need in Fukuoka is a modern art museum or art centers like YCAM in Yamaguchi. If there is a place like YCAM in Fukuoka, it will be a core center for a Fukuoka’s creative scene to spread it out. I think people in Fukuoka has great attentions to fashion and design, so this might be a focal point to make a creative wave in the city. A few years ago, I rarely see Kogyaru in Fukuoka. And there are great number of hair salons, I heard. The simple and refined visual expression would be a key point to develop the Fukuoka’s creative scene.

How do you spend your free time?

I often go out. I don’t wanna stay in my room a whole day. I often come up with ideas when I do something completely different from my job.

Please share with us your recommend places in Fukuoka.

In Fukuoka you will be fascinated by food including Motsunabe, local chickens, fresh fishes and Tonkotsu Noodles. The good thing about food in Fukuoka is it is reasonable and very delicious.
My special place is Mokkoan located in Ropponmatu, Fukuoka. I learn Chinshinryu, the samurai tea ceremony there. The building was built in Sukiya architecture like Machiya in Kyoto. There is a Japanese café Yosikura and a Kimono bar called Bar Tabakoya. There are events and regular workshops for tea ceremony and Japanese sweets. In the second floor there is provides low-priced lodging room for visitors. If you help owner’s herb garden, you can stay free?! When stay in Fukuoka, please stop by!
