In September 2008, Dubai added one more ultra luxury hotels in the city – Atlantis. Its red carpet opening party was broadcast around the world, with 100,000 fireworks followed by a performance by Kylie Minogue2008年9月、ドバイの街にまたひとつ最高級ホテルが加わった。100,000発の超豪華花火とカイリー・ミノーグのパフォーマンスによる、アトランティス・ホテルのオープニングパーティの様子は世界中でニュースとなった。ロバート・デ・ニーロを含む、出演料2,000万ドル級のセレブも多く訪れた。この世界で最もリッチなプライベートパーティのために特別に用意された料理は、この豪華なホテルにもレストランチェーン「NOBU」を出店する松久信幸によるもの。
人工島のパーム・ジュメイラに建てられたこのホテルには、アクアベンチャーという東京ドームの４倍のサイズを誇る160,000m2のウォーターパークもある。また、このウォーターパークに直結した45,000m2のドルフィンベイではイルカと一緒に泳ぐことができる。天井が魚のペイントで飾られたホテルの廊下を歩けば５つ星のホテルに来たというよりも子供の頃に訪れた海辺のように感じるだろう。ホテルの中心部にある100万リットルの水槽の中には65,000匹の様々な魚が泳いでおり、誰もが立ち止まって見入ってしまうほどだ。
このホテルの一部の個室からもこの水槽を見ることができる。この巨大な水槽の中にはインド洋から「保護」されたという絶滅危惧種のジンベエザメもいる。このホテルで飼育されているジンベイザメは一部の動物保護団体から「サミー」というあだ名で呼ばれており、彼女を再び自然に返すようホテル側に要求している。しかし、このホテルがレプリカのおもちゃを99ディルハムで売り始めたことに伴い、訪問者の間でのサミーの人気は上昇するばかり。ホテルがサミーとお別れする日はまだまだ遠いようだ。

Translation: Ayano Yamada. Other celebrities at the US$20million gala included Robert De Niro. The special meal for the world most expensive private party was prepared by Nobu Matsuhisa whose famous Japanese restaurant chain Nobu has also launched a branch in this luxury hotel.
Located on manmade island ‘Palm Jumeirah’, it has 160,000m2 water park called Aquaventure, which is four times the size of Tokyo Dome. Connected to it is the 45,000m2 Dolphin Bay where you can swim with dolphins. The corridors of the hotel, adorned with painted fish on the ceiling, feels more like a childhood visit to the seaside than a five star hotel.
In the core part of the hotel, 65,000 fish of all varieties stop to stare with wide-open eyes from one million litre acquarium, which also can be viewed from some bedrooms of this hotel. This massive fish tank also contains a whale shark, said to have been ‘rescued’ from the Indian Ocean.
Since the shark is part of an endangered species, local campaigners dubbed her Sammy, and demanded the hotel release her back into the wild. However, the growth in popularity of the shark among visitors, coupled with the fact that the hotel has begun selling a stuffed toy replica for 99DHS, all make it unlikely that officials will say farewell to Sammy anytime soon.
