In 2010 Anne Aarsland graduated from the University of Copenhagen with an MA in Art History and Visual Culture, she has been actively exhibiting since 20012010年コペンハーゲン大学の美術史、ビジュアルカルチャーの修士を卒業したアナ・オースランドは、2001年から積極的に展示を行ってきたアーティスト。特徴的な抽象化と少し変わったスタイルの組み合わせ、多彩色の豊かさの全てを合わせたスタイルが彼女の知的なアートスタイルだ。作品のディテールはエネルギーあふれる心を反映した素晴らしいものだが、一見カオスに見えるペインティングもコントロールされた秩序を保っている。そんな作品を生み出す彼女がインタビューに応じてくれた。
ご自身について教えてください。
比喩的な物を含まない表現で大規模な作品を制作しています。マスキングテープを用いることで、緩さとペイントの表現力を組み合わせ、しっかりと構成された表現やパターンシステムを使って作品を描いています。これらの要素の組み合わせによって、コンスタントにバリエーションを模索し続けたいと考えています。これらの複合的な作品は、神経質な特別なエネルギーを作品に与えてくれると思います。
約20年間作品の制作を続けており、これまで多くのギャラリー、アート施設、アートフェアでの展示を行ってきました。またコペンハーゲン大学の修士号を２つ取得しています。
制作のインスピレーションをどういったものから得るのですか？
ビルの模様や歩道の色といった街の風景、ファッション、アートなど周りにある全てのものです。インスピレーションは素晴らしいですが、ペインティング自体は常にハードワークと経験から成り立っています。
どのように色彩を選択していますか？ご自身の特徴的な色使いがあると思いますか？
全ての色が組み合わせによって、全く違った表情を見せるので面白いです。重要なポイントは他の色との組み合わせです。この小さなパズルのような組み合わせの作業や、全く同じ色が他の色と組み合わされたときに見せる違いが大好きです。また、色合いのニュアンスもとても重要です。赤という色一つとってみてもただの赤は存在せず、ライトレッド、ダークレッド、ワインレッドやオレンジ、紫に近い赤、澄んだ赤や透き通った赤など様々です。つまりどんな色を好んでどんな色を選ぶかは、その組み合わせたニュアンスによって違ってくるためはっきりと言うことは難しいです。
作品は何千もの小さなパーツが炸裂する、強烈で神経質な何かを脅かすようなエネルギーの蓄積のようにも映りますが、どの程度あなた自身を反映していると思いますか？
作品を制作するときは、色、組成、描くエネルギーなどその作品自体のことを考えるようにしています。私が誰かということや私の作品としてどのように表現すべきかといったことは考えません。とても複雑で常に変化している「私たちが誰なのか」という問いを反映しているかもしれません。この問いは数千ものパーツ、繋がり、経験などからできていて、しなやかでありながら壊れやすいのです。私の作品は、私たちはいったい誰なのかということ、つまり制御と欲望のような何かの狭間で可変性と脆弱性を表現したものと言えるかもしれません。
作品に様々な感情を込めているように感じますが、完成した作品を見てどのように思いますか？
完成した作品は、いつも次の作品制作のアイディアを与えてくれます。完成した作品が私のインスピレーションになっているのです。
デンマークで作品を描くのに完璧なロケーションはどこですか？やはりアトリエが一番ですか？
街とアトリエの両方ですね。もちろんアトリエで制作している時間がとても好きで、制作には欠かせません。しかしアトリエにこもりすぎないこともとても重要だと考えています。ペイントはただ自分の内なる感情を描くだけではないのでアウトプットのためのインプットが必要です。
コペンハーゲンのおすすめの場所を教えてください。
自転車でオープンカフェ、ギャラリー、美術館、公園、私が住んでいるフレゼレクスベアを回るのがおすすめです。お出かけには、どこでいつどんなギャラリーがオープンしているのかこちらのサイトでチェックできます。ギャラリーを楽しんだあとは、フィスケバーでワインと料理、キャリアバーではお酒を楽しめます。ヴェスタブロゲーゼ通りに位置するリッドコエブも同様に美味しいお酒と素敵な雰囲気のテラス席があります。ビールを飲みながらゆったりと過ごしたいときは街の中心部にあるビーヨン・クロ(Møntergade 8)とパレバーがおすすめです。
ショッピングには、フレゼレクスベアのウッドウッド、アクネ、ヘンリック・ヴィブスコブ、ノイ・ノーテスをおすすめします。
コペンハーゲンのもう一つの忘れてはいけないのは、サンクト・アンネ・レストランでのランチ。ここでは質の高いデンマーク料理のスモーブローを素敵な雰囲気の中でいただくことができます。予約も忘れずに。

Translation: Satsuki Miyanishi . Wonderful abstractions, odd combinations of style and a wondrous polychromy all together constitute Anne Aarsland’s magical and intellectual art practice. Her work is incredible to view; the details are extraordinary and reflect a mind which appears to be bursting with energy. However, the painting does have order and a sense of control despite its appearance of chaos. She made time to answer some of our questions.
Please introduce yourself and your work.
I work with large scale paintings in a non figurative expression. By using masking tape I make a tightly constructed expression, an almost patternlike system, which I combine with a more loose and expressive use of paint. By combining these different elements I hope to maintain a feeling of constant possible variation. I think this mixture provides a special – almost nervous – energy to the paintings. I’ve been painting for about 20 years and exhibited at galleries, art institutions and art fairs. I have a master in History of Art from University of Copenhagen.
Where do you get your inspiration from when working on a painting?
I get inspired by everything around me, the city, fashion, art – a pattern in a building or maybe the colors of the sidewalk. Inspiration is nice, but my paintings are mainly made from hard work and experience.
What are your choice of colours? Do you find yourself identifying with certain colours?
I believe all colours are interesting, because they change completely depending on which colours they are placed together with. The importance of every colour is therefore the combination with other colours. I love this little puzzle with putting the colours together, and see how par example the ‘same’ red changes through the picture when mixing with the different colours. I also find the nuance of the colours very important, a red is never just a red – is it light/ dark/ grumsy/ orange or purple nuance? Clear or transparent? In other words it’s difficult to say which colours I choose and prefer, because it depends entirely on the combinations and the nuance.
Your paintings have been described as an intense and nervous accumulation of energy threatening to blow up the work in thousands of small parts, to what extent do you feel this reflects yourself?
When I work I think of the work itself – the play between color, composition and energy that makes my paintings. I don’t think of who I am and how it might be expressed in my paintings. But that said, I also believe that who we are is a complex and constantly changing state, made of thousands of pieces, connections, experiences etc and this composition is both elastic and fragile. So in that way I guess my paintings can be seen as a picture of who we are – the changeability and fragility held together between something like control and lust.
It feels like you pour a lot of emotion into each painting, how do you feel when you look at a finished piece?
Looking at a finished painting is usually just filling me with ideas for the next painting. So I guess my paintings somehow inspire me.
Where would you find a painter’s perfect location in Denmark? Or, would you say your perfect place is in the studio?
Well I’d say both the city and the studio. Of course I need my studio to make the paintings and I love the time in the studio. But I also believe its very important not to isolate in the studio – to paint is not just ‘painting out all your inner emotions’. I need some input to make some output ;-)
Please give us your recommendations for visiting in Copenhagen.
I definitely recommend going around Copenhagen by bike, visiting all the outdoor cafes, galleries, museums, green parks and Frederiksberg where I live.
For going out I recommend going to gallery openings – check out where and when at Kopenhagen.dk. Afterwards I recommend nice wine and food at Fiskebaren or maybe a drink at Karrierebar. Liedkoeb at Vesterbrogade also have nice drinks and a lovely outdoor seating. For a relaxed evening with beers I recommend the small bars Byens Kro (Møntergade 8) and Palæbar in the city center.
For shopping I recommend Wood Wood, Acne, Henrik Vibskov, Casa Shop and the small shop Nué Notes at Frederiksberg.
One more important recommendation for Copenhagen: Lunch at the Sankt Annæ Restaurant. It has classic Danish food (smørrebrød), excellent quality, and a great atmosphere, however reservation is necessary.
