アートは全ての人々に開かれているべきだ。この考えに基づき、実業家でありチーズの卸し業者でもあったクヌード・W・イェンセンはコペンハーゲン郊外のフムレベックに個人の美術館Art should not be exclusive. With that approach the businessman and cheese wholesaler, Knud W. Jensen, built his art museum, Louisiana, in Humlebæk outside Copenhagen. It would be a museum there everyone, and not just an art cultivated elite, could experience and meet the fine arts. The critics called it populism but since the 50’s Louisiana have become one of the largest art museums in Scandinavia with a considerable international reputation.
The permanent exhibition takes it point of departure in the period after 1945 with a general focus on painting and sculpture. It contains works by such artists as Picasso, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Yves Klein and Andy Warhol. But every year Louisiana presents 4-6 temporary exhibitions focusing on modernist artist or the latest international contemporary artists. And as well as its source of inspiration, MoMA, Louisiana offers shows and exhibitions on cultural-history, photo, design and architecture, wanting to show the interaction between different art forms.
Louisiana centers around a 19th century house which also gives the museum its name. The villa was built by the Master of the Royal Hunt, Alexander Brun who married three different women during his life, all named Louise. From this villa the museum has grown under the supervision of the architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhelm Wohlert. Apparently they studied and walked around the villa and its park, which slopes gently towards the Øresund sound, for a month before coming up with a design. The museum is a quite unobtrusive building which communicates and opens up to the landscape and the beautiful scenery. It becomes a perfect mixture of art, architecture and landscape and creates a welcoming atmosphere.
There are many concerts, lectures and debates held at Louisiana and along with the welcoming architecture, the seaside café and the large park it creates an open atmosphere and a lively museum. For the youngest visitors there is an art playground so that they may experience art in their own way. Classical concerts with prominent international young artists are held in the concert hall every now and then. In the store you can find a large selection of art and architecture book as well as Danish design classics and the cafeteria provides slightly overpriced but well tasting food and offers an excellent view.

Text: Erik Westeman、ルイジアナ近代美術館を設立した。アートに詳しい一部の人に限らず、全ての人々が様々な芸術に出会い、経験することのできる美術館だ。批評家達はそれをポピュリズムであると非難したが、50年代以来、ルイジアナは、スカンジナビア屈指の規模を誇る、世界的にもその名を知られた美術館である。
ルイジアナの常設展は、1945年以降のさまざまな絵画や彫刻に焦点を当てており、ピカソ、ジャコメッティ、デュビュッフェ、イヴ・クイラインやアンディ・ウォーホルなどを展示している。それに加え、年間４〜６回開催される企画展では、国際的な現代アーティストを取り上げている。さらに、ルイジアナでは、文化的な歴史、写真、デザイン、そして建築物の展示などを通じて、異なるアートフォーム間の交流を見せていきたいと考えている。
ルイジアナは、その名前の由来にもなった19世紀の大邸宅を中心に成り立っている。生涯で３人の妻を娶り、その名前が全てルイーズ（すなわちルイジアナ）だったという、領主であったアレクサンダー・バーンによって建てられたもの。美術館は、建築家ヨーエン・ボーとヴィルヘルム・ヴォリャートの指揮下、この大邸宅を基盤にして増築を重ねられたのだが、二人は設計案をおこす前、一月かけて入念にその建物と、エースレンド海峡に向かって緩やかに傾斜する公園周辺を調査したと言われている。美術館はとても控えめな建築で、建てられた場所の地形と美しい景観に対して開かれ調和したものとなっている。アートと建築、そして景観が完璧に混ざり合い、訪れるものを優しく迎え入れてくれるような趣をつくり出している。
ルイジアナでは多くのコンサートや講演会、集会が催されており、その暖かい趣の建築や海沿いのカフェ、そして大きな公園と共に、オープンで活気のある美術館を創出している。子供の来館者向けにはアートを取り入れた遊び場も設けられており、各自が思い思いのやり方でアートにふれあう事ができるようになっている。コンサートホールでは、時折若く才能豊かな国際的アーティストによるクラシックコンサートも開催されている。ミュージアム・ショップにはデンマークの伝統的なデザインに加え、アートと建築に関する書物が幅広く揃っており、少々値段設定は高いものの、カフェテリアでは上質の料理と素晴らしい眺めを楽しむことができる。
