Sae Honda is an Amsterdam-based jewelry artist creating artificial stones from recycled plastics. In commemoration of the publication of her collection EVERYBODY NEEDS A ROCK from torch press.捨てられたプラスティックから人工石を制作するアムステルダム在住の日本人ジュエリー作家・本多沙映。作品集「EVERYBODY NEEDS A ROCK」が「torch press」（トーチ・プレス）から発売された。
ダイヤモンドが単なる地球形成における地下底活動の産物であるように、
私の石は現代文化が生み出した堆積物である。
プラスチックごみのような見過ごされたものを大事に
扱い祝福することで、そこに新しい価値を生み出し、
日常の何気ない風景を違う角度から見る視点を提案する。

まずはじめに、自己紹介をお願いします。
オランダのアムステルダムに在住していて、ヘリット・リートフェルト・アカデミー・ジュエリー学科で学びました。このアカデミーのジュエリー学科は、ジュエリーという概念を起点に幅広い表現方法で制作を進める人の集まる面白いところで、私自身も色々なメディウムで制作していて、ジュエリーアーティストを名乗る時もあれば単にアーティストを名乗る場合もあります。
捨てられたプラスティックからジュエリーを制作することになったきっかけは何だったのでしょうか？
ジュエリー科で価値について考えていた中で、ハワイ島のカミロビーチという太平洋からのごみがたくさん流れ着くことで有名な場所で見つかったプラスチックが混ざり合った新種の石の記事を見て、その新しい石が遠い未来で価値を持ったものになっているかもしれないという想像ふくらんでいったことがきっかけでした。流れ着いたプラスチックゴミがキャンプファイヤーや清掃活動などを通した何らかの熱によって溶かされ、それが周りの自然物と一体化して石となるという生成プロセスを自分なりに真似して見たところ、まるで自然物のような表情が出て来たことが面白く感じました。
アムステルダム市立美術館に収蔵された作品について教えてください。
卒業制作展で出していたジュエリー３点なのですが、古代から近代にかけての世界中の装飾品のデザインをシンプルにデフォルメしたもので、卒業制作展の作品が美術館のキュレーターの目に留まり、コレクションとして収蔵されています。
アムステルダムに住むことになったのはいつですか？
５年前で、ヘリット・リートフェルト・アカデミーに行きたくて来たのですが、住みやすいし、ヨーロッパの他の国にも行きやすい。デザインシーンも活発で、ヨーロッパのニューヨークとも言われるくらい移民が多く、様々な文化がミックスされているのが面白いです。
アムステルダムでお気に入りの場所や過ごし方はありますか？
大型の古道具店などが多く、時間があれば物色するのが好きです。
アムステルダムでの普段の生活について教えてください。
自身の制作活動のほか、日本文化の交流のために、ジャパン・カルチャー・エクスチェンジのお手伝いをしていたりもしています。
アトリエに行く時は、お昼くらいから20時くらいまで過ごします。
アムステルダムのおすすめスポットを教えてください。
アムステルダム市立美術館や写真のミュージアム「フォーム」、小さなギャラリーも沢山あります。
アムステルダムで初めて出来たラーメン店「FOU FOW」。オーナーが映画監督でアーティストが働いていたりクリエイターが集まっています。

First of all, please introduce yourself.
I currently live and work in Amsterdam, Netherlands and learned jewelry at Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Its jewelry department is an interesting community of people who explore various expressions in the field of jewelry. I use multi-media and identify myself as a jewelry artist and also just an artist.
What did inspire you to make jewelry from wasted plastics?
When I was learning the value of jewelry in the college, I read an article about new stones made by a mixture of plastics, which were found at Kamilo Beach, Hawaii where a large quantity of trash is drifted from the Pacific. That made me imagine that the new stones might be a valuable material in the future. I imitated the formation process of plastic stones that the plastic trash is melted by heat of camping fire or cleaning activity and becomes a stone by integrating with natural objects and I enjoyed to see nature in the artificial stones.
Please tell me about your work in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
They are three pieces made for the graduation show and I simply deformed design of ancient and modern ornaments all over the world. They got eyes of a curator of the museum at the show and became a part of the collection.
When did you decide to live in Amsterdam?
It was 5 years ago. I came here to go to the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. It is confortable to live here and easy to access to other European countries. The scene of design market is also active. There are many immigrants like New York of Europe and the mixture of multi-culture is interesting.
Do you have any favorite places or ways to spend time in Amsterdam?
There are many large prop stores and I like to look them around.
Please tell your personal daily life.
Besides my making, I help Japanese Culture Exchange for Japanese cultural communication. I usually in my studio from noon to 8pm.
Could you recommend any places to go?
I like Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the photography museum FORM. There are also many small galleries.
The first ramen restaurant FOU FOW is owned by a film directer and many creative people gather there.
