Subjectively over the last several years I have been feeling that youth culture movement is gradually turning off despite the fact that its whole volume consisting of branched-out factions is getting steadily bigger and bigger. At least here in Sapporo, it must be true. I often see a variety of people from diffrent background and feel somehow that the number of the persons with strong will and clear vison is getting less and less. Nowadays some of us must be uncounciously obsessed with an idea that every bits and pieces deriving from our daily life could be meaningless... Yeah, each indivisual is just too flimsy against this whole political and economic system.

Except for special events, in week days' clubs and the likes all you could see is only several crazily self-satisfied dancing people in front of huge sound speakers and lonely DJs spinning their favourite stuff in this city. But once you step out to big outdoor music festivals, you can see tons of thousands of people just going hyper-nuts. However, this is an exception. Festival is just a festival where you are supposed to be nuts. For most people, music is still an excuse for parties.

With mixed and unclear feelings about recent music scene, I thought about combining photography with something unusual for Dot Soso in a very special way.
I once saw a contemporary dance show featuring a unit of hungarian dancers. When skilfull leader of the unit utilised hungarian sign language for his solo show, I had kind of unexplainable feeling. It looked quite original to me.
Yeah, I decided to tie sign language with photography. Soon I met up with some deaf people and they kindly taught me how to express in Japanese sign language.

PHOTOGRAPHY which is usually still and never represent a sequence of time, A MESSAGE formed by the people who come over to Dot Soso party and A QUESTION against the unleashed and lost zeitgaist.To combine all these elements, I picked up the lyrics of Imagine by John Lennon. Each of some sixty photos shows one meaning and all the photos represent the whole lyrics.

あくまで主観的な感覚ですが、ここ数年ユース・カルチャーというのが全体のボリュームを変えることなく、あるいはむしろボリューム・アップしているにも関わらず、すっかり細分化されて、大きなうねりを感じることがなくなっていると感じます。少なくともここ札幌では。ランダムにいろいろな年齢層の人々に接していますが、何かビジョンがあったり、実行力を発揮している人というのが、ますます少なくなっているような気がします。実は「全てが無目的化しているような時代感覚」を共有しながら、それでは自分たちの未来に対する展望が危ういという無意識的感覚。あまりにも巨大なシステムの前であまりにも非力な個人たち。

もはや格別のイベント以外では客入りの少ないクラブのような場所でも、フロアーにいるのはサウンドシステムの真正面で孤独に踊り狂う者、そして音を出すＤＪも淡々と仕事をこなし、自らの世界をただ確認するのみなのでは…　というような感覚を覚えるような場合も少なくありません。しかし、ひとたび野外の大きなミュージック・フェスに目を向けるとコール・アンド・レスポンスで熱狂する大量の人々であふれかえるのですが、これは年に一度か二度のお祭り、いわば「非日常」です。

そんな感慨をしばらく持ちつつ「音楽」というものについて考え、また自らの「写真」というものについて考えているうちに、数年前に観たハンガリーのコンテンポラリーダンスを思い出しました。ベテランのダンサーはその現代的な舞台装置と身体的な動作の中に手話を取り入れていたのです。性質上時間軸を伴わない写真と、パーティーに参加する人を結びつけ、メッセージを全員で形成し、無目的化した時代感覚に対する問い、そして「イマジン」の歌詞。手話は貴重なツールです。聾唖者や関連の方々に協力してもらい手話訳をなんとか仕上げました。参加者がいちいちこの内容を理解していたかは定かではありませんが、とにかく60名余りの人々に加わってもらい、一人一語形式で写真を撮影しました。

ここでは写真が伝統的な写真というメディアの枠を越えていくというところで「現代的」です。平たく言えば「現代写真」ということになります。少なくともこの背後にはそういった要素が展開される世界もあるということを最後に記しておきます。
