当1928ビルは、昭和３年（1928年）武田五一氏の設計により、大阪毎日新聞社京都支局ビルとして建築されました。社章をモチーフとしたバルコニーの形状や玄関左右のランプカバーのデザイン等に、The theater, Art Complex 1928, opened 1999 by renovating a historical modern building, a former newspaper company built in 1928.アール・デコの影響が認められ、意匠史の上からも注目に値する建築物として、京都市登録有形文化財に登録されています。

歴史的な建造物が次々と姿を消していく中で、一時は老朽化による解体も心配されましたが、建築家・若林広幸が買取り、耐震壁を補強するなどして保存されることになりました。そして現在、80年を経た今も建築当時の姿をそのままに残す当ビルは、時間の堆積と共に、独特の文化的雰囲気を醸し出しています。
中でもアーチ型形状をもつホールは、旧くより演劇公演や講演会等、広く市民に利用され親しまれて参りました。

1999年、このスペースが、現代の多様なニーズに対応すべく新しい設備を加え、「アートコンプレックス1928」となりました。
「アートコンプレックス1928」は複合的にアートを体験できる「開かれた場」をコンセプトに、意欲的に活動を続けて参ります。

One architect decided to buy this building and asked Keito Kohara, the recent director, to utilize the space. With his experience working as lighting technician and later as stage director, the space was renovated as a new theater.
The key concept of Art Complex 1928 is “Complex Art”. Kabuki is a well-known representation of Japanese Complex Art. In this spirit, we aim to promote a company or a piece, contemporary to traditional, which incorporates multiple elements of performance.
