Granvista Gallery Sapporo will present “Hozumi Nakahira Photo Exhibition: JAZZ GIANTS 1961-2013” from September 18th.
It was the time of junior high school for him to get the camera for the first time, which was Kodak his father gave such as a toy.
As he as a student has been gone to Jazz cafe, cinema and storyteller’s theater, in 1961 he opened his own jazz cafe “DIG” in Shinjuku, Tokyo. On January of the same year, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers visited first to Japan, and it became his start of jazz photo for him shot photos at the time. Since interviewing the “Newport Jazz Festival” in 1966 and being shocked the performance of John Coltrane, he have been visited to shoot the jazz scene of America and Europe every year.
More than 50 years has past since he started the jazz photo. Mr. Nakahira said, “About the photo of musicians, the more it becomes difficult to point to them, the more we become intimate, so I could not shoot several scenes. However I remind them in photo paper of my mind and never forget.” At the exhibition, you could feel the world of jazz that was be able to be captured because of he.
