Newport Street Gallery is a very large space consisting of six main exhibition areas, and Turk’s work has been placed pretty much everywhere. Gavin Turk “Who What When Where How & Why” displays both older work and new previously unexhibited work. His work explores the value of things as well as the concept of influence.

Walking through the exhibition is a bit like walking through the history of his work; we can start with the blue plaque from “Cave” which dates back to 1991 and see more recent work from over twenty years later. This allows us to try and see the development of his art over time and reflect back on it. A 1994 piece, “Identity Crisis” shows the artist on the front cover of Hello magazine, while the famous waxwork of “Pop” also makes an appearance.

A black skip is surrounded by deceptively looking black bags “Pile”, but any cleaner trying to pick these up to throw away will be surprised – they are bronze casts. “Nomad” is also in this exhibition, alongside more black bags. A reminder perhaps to look at what we don’t choose to look at?
