I was specially surprised with the work of Soso Limited and the piece they created for OFFF 2010, “I’m sorry“, using a similar engine as for previous projects such as “Prime Numerics” and “The Long Conversation“. They split TV audio and video signals, analyze spoken words from the audio and apply a real-time visualization of the analyzed data on top of the video signal, combining both again to deliver the final AV output. This basic principle is altered differently in each of their projects.

We also had a very inspiring talk by Craig Ward, a revolutionary talk by Non-Format and had the chance to see the great work of Projector Inc. I have also enjoyed the lecture by Hoss Gifford and been as usual very inspired with Matt Pike’s talk.

But among all of them, one man brought most of the magic to celebrate OFFF’s tenth anniversary in Paris. Surprisingly, his conference was scheduled first in the morning, and I must admit I feel ashamed since I missed a big part of it. Joachim Sauter, a media artist and one of the founders of ART+COM in Berlin, shares his shiny and motivating visions about the renaissance of space. Joachim’s work is mostly focused on installations for exhibition and public spaces where the use of technology is completely hidden. The results are different amazing and beautiful pieces of work. If you want to have an idea about what it was, feel free to check one of his conferences available on Vimeo.

Joachim Sauter is also a regular teacher and lecturer at the Digital Media Arts program at the UDK in Berlin. Furthermore, he ends his conference talking about a project of one of his students, Julius Von Bismarck. “Image Fulgurator” is a device for physical manipulation of pictures based on a Flash-reactive mechanism. In other words, This device allows to project images invisible to the naked eye, but visible on pictures that have been taking using a Flash light. Julius camouflages his device into a old-school press camera which allows him to freely perform in the public space. He has “fulgurated” Klaus Wowereit (Mayor of Berlin), the Mao Zedong portrait at Tienanmen Square in Beijing and Barack Obama’s speech in Germany among others. Check this video interview at the creators project for more information.
