THE 5TH BERLIN BIENNALE

Old Norman’s land − the large empty lot between East and West Berlin, reveals a particular scenery that is perceivably the trace of the wall. Skulpturenpark Berlin Zentrum which is the project developed to place art in such places was launched by 5 artists in 2007 and has been attracting attention for its experimental and active exhibitions. The areas of this project are integrated into this year’s biennale.

Steelkill, Luciana Lamothe, 2008

The works of some artists spread all over the stretch of a space. For example Luciana Lamothe writes big letters backword “CORTARTE TO DO (CUT YOU OFF)“ in Spanish on the billboard, and its background makes a reference to the Palace of the Old Republic.

Similar themes can be seen at different sites. In the construction, filmed in Ania Molska’s video works, the space is separated by a wall and fence designed by Kateřina Šedá who is exhibiting at another site work related to ‘living’.

The Naked City, Pedro Barateiro, 2008

Pedro Barateiro exhibits a sculpture of a large chair in front of the departure and arrival depots for shuttle buses of the Neue National Gallery, as well as the work of a bench with a roof which you can use to shelter you from the rain.

Cyprien Gaillard creates a lamplit and shadeless space in the nighttime.

On approaching it, the sound installation of Susan Hiller impressively begins.
