CATALINA ESTRADA

PEOPLEText: Julio Cesar Palacio

Catalina’s work have something that make her so different than the majority of contemporary art manifestations. Her work evokes happiness, calm and relaxed paradises, were she enjoy to dream in a better and magical world.

Even taught, you cannot name Catalina’s work as innocence or naive, but maybe evolve from the magic realism that she learnt from Colombian literature, traditional music and the tales she was told.

Catalina explains that another important artistic influence for her is Kenojuak (Eskimo artist), Noe Leon (Colombian artists) and the Japanese graphic culture and TV cartoons as Heidi, Marco, Candi Candi, that she grew up watching.

Right now Catalina is coming back from Seattle were she has presented her work (and still) at Roq La Rue Gallery. She is also working in the illustrations of “Spooky” calendar for Die Gestalten Verlag. Is making an 3 x 1,5m Illustration for a Clinic in Guadalajara (Mexico).

On October you can visit her world in the exhibition she’s preparing for the important Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona.
