CMYK FESTIVAL 2005

HAPPENINGText: Yurie Hatano

On the last day of the festival, SHIFT also had a presentation in “FORM” section as a guest magazine. We gave a very simple introduction mainly about the connection between SHIFT and the gallery cafe SOSO which SHIFT produces. Then after that, more people talked to us in the main lounge. This presentation program from each guest magazine was not in last year’s festival, but seemed that it carried out a very good function in introducing everyone to each other, and to recognize the director from each magazine.

As for the round table carried out with several guest magazines in this “FORM” section, it might be easier for you to imagine it as a “talk show” rather than a “discussion”; the hall had a big stage and seats for guests this year, while it was just a flat space with audiences speaking freely last year. Speakers on the stage asked for questions from the seats every time, but only few people made remarks. Of course it could be said that this was the obvious proof of this festival’s growth.

Comparing with the report from last year, this year’s CMYK has increased in scale as a whole; the area and the number of mobilizations in the venue, the number of sections and the smoothness of progress or translation. CMYK Magazine, which was published during the festival, also appeared with many pages increased, and turned into a full book. In spite of having difficulties due to financial issues, this growth shows the effort and enthusiasm of all the staff headed by the representative of CMYK, Victoria Gomez. At the same time, it should be noted that there are some disadvantages to the growth, such as that the discussion has lost its heat, and that there used be a good old and small atmosphere which can be created only in a traditional building. However, this is the relationship between plus and minus points, which all successful events gaining a large scale have.

After all, CMYK reached its end with a closing party on Saturday night. The venue was Palo Alto a place having warehouses with a big chimney. Although participants of this festival had been very busy with respective communications all the time, including at the opening party and at CCCB, they all laughed and danced to a strange but exciting performance by Chicks on Speed from Germany at this party.

It was a very lively three days. Each unique magazine with strong will and beliefs gave great inspirations to each other. Even for the people who were not related to the magazines, the whole content must be enjoyable enough. I realized the meaning of meeting people in the real world, not only in the world online with communication from overseas. Also, if you have your favorite magazine, it is just wonderful to know the people who send it. CMYK is establishing its existence as a unique and matchless worldwide festival that is thoroughly appropriate to the focus of magazine culture and will surely grow up and continue to the 3rd and 4th years and on into the future.
