NOMEDA AND GEDIMINAS URBONAS “RUTA REMAKE”

HAPPENINGText: Emanuelis Ryklys

Let’s talk about sounds again. Walking through the exhibition sound samples of women voices catches you in different ways. Singing talking shuffles between muttering, whispering. Everything is recorded, but still you can enjoy interactivity of these samples and it gives a sense of live performing.

Interactivity is produced with the help of TheraMIDI device, which works in the same principle as the legendary Theremin Vox. It’s more about senses than know-how to use this kind of machines. The sound is obtained with the help of transformed light/shadow signal.

The authors collaborated with German sound engineer Otto Kraenzler (electronic music pioneer who worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen himself) and programmer Steven Greenwood to release this interactive sound installation – the part of Ruta Remake project.

While visitor (who can be anyone) moves his hand above special surface (table), sound samples are activated according to created code. This code is a digital script that graphically translates sounds into rue (plant) pattern’s motive. Rue pattern in this case becomes the score of this installation.

The Ruta Remake offered one more opportunity to “taste” rue’s pattern. During presentation in Vilnius’s CAC the project invited femal music producers (composers/djs) from younger generation to recompose The Ruta Remake’s sound archive.

Otto Kraenzler (the creator of technological system of the Ruta Remake) also was attracted to this sound lab to introduced various angles of the mixing: from John Cage’s mixing variations to nowadays computerized conceptual mixing abilities. The visitor can watch and listen to this mixology concert as it was recorded during performance.
