DUBLAB

PEOPLEText: Aya Muto

For those whom have been their followers might have noticed Dublab’s slight step back on technical presentation towards end of last year. They knew what they want to do too well, which resulted in trying too much too quick. The live web cam that served 16h a day, totaling 100h strong a week, has been replaced by 2 week rotation of audio stream. Strategy has been well practiced by altering the air schedule within that 2 week period so that diverse program reaches audience who tend to listen in around the same time slot. DJs too, “get a lot more excited to play the records with this new schedule,” confirms Frosty. “Presentation has became even tighter.”

With so many web sites out there, everyone goes for ‘beam! flash!! futuristic!!!’ looks. Dublab feels content not to follow the trend, and remains organic. Pastel color palettes that are soothing to your eyes, comforting simple icons…although you’ll see the Flash effects been sparkled in its soil, the presentation remains in minimal aesthetic. “We are currently on works to make the site look like a control palette. James and Rob have been working hard to have a look that will enable the audience to bare the stare…and we’re almost there.” smiles Frosty with a mock print out of the future Dublab. Play list will be provided for each program. Links to the artists will thrive as their resident and guest DJs grow. The gradual but certain step has been taken.

Dublab is audience friendly.10 residence DJs and approximately 50 family DJs in house, everyone is a musicologist in their own way. Their field varies, yet the attitude are unite in all. “By any means we don’t know everything about music. Obviously we put a lot of time in learning records and as we learn about it, we want to share it with people. Dublab is an outlet for that. We want to be educational, but just casually like a friend playing CD for you when hanging out at their house. We want that kind of relationship with listeners. Have a living room feel to it.” states Frosty.

Dublab presents “Freeways” was released in June 2001 with that very mission. It’s their welcome to the dublab living room. Collaborating with Emperor Norton, dublab already has future release plans in works to follow this first compilation album. “The really cool thing is we have a lot of really talented producers and/or DJs. We have so much great music that isn’t anywhere else and they have been really enthusiastic lately. As much as will pursue producing compilation albums, if the single artist is ready, we will have that artist’s CD in roll. It’s just so great to be surrounded by creative groups of people.”
