DEREK JARMAN “GLITTERBUG”

THINGSText: Atsuko Kobayashi

In the 80’s, he leaned towards the decadant culture scene and took a great deal of symbolic footages of the era: The last meeting of William Burroughs, dance by Michael Clark, Genesis P Olidge of Slopping Gristle/Psychic TV etc.

Last of England (1987)

Brian Eno made the soundtrack using experimental and fascinating sounds. All the footages in the film were shot before 1986. After tha, he found that he was infected with HIV and moved into a cottage where there is still a nuclear generator.

The Garden (1990)

While planting a number of flowers and trees, he eventually created a marvellously beautiful garden known as The Garden of Derek Jarman. Still then, he kept shooting films such as The Garden (1990), Edward II (1992) and Blue (1993).

Edward II (1991)

“The film director who is able to take the films they want to take should be pleased for doing that. I have never taken the films that don’t get on with my thoughts.” It seems like he fought against the world where there’s always conflicts going on here and there, people who never stop destoying the earth, the disease that cause a death by loving someone .
